Foodtour Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Come and visit the lovely village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence with me. Saint-Rémy is not only known for the remains of the ancient Gallic city Glanum (6th century BC) but it is also the birthplace of Nostradamus and was a temporary home for Vincent van Gogh in the 19th century.

During our foodtour I will of course tell you all about this (that's the liiiitle bit of history part of our walk) but we will mainly stroll the typical Provençal streets and talk food!

We will visit different shops and restaurants and taste various snacks and dishes from the renowned French kitchen. What are the typical meals during the day in a French family? How come that small children already know how to bake cakes? What is being served in school canteens? What about Christmas dinner and other French traditions? All the answers during the Food 'n Fun Tour in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

The meeting point will be on the largest free public parking in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, le parking de la Libération.  You will get all the precise details after booking. From there on, we will start our walk through the typical center of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. We will make about seven stops, depending on the time of year, all of them introducing you to the specialities of the French or Saint Rémy kitchen.

There is lot's of family history coming by with, for example the Lilamand family. The company was founded in 1866 and five generations later they are still producing these wonderful fruits that have an important part in the Provençal Christmas dinner..

And how about the delicious dried tomato and tapenade spreads from the Msica family, where grandmother Odette started the business in the 1970s by selling her home-made foods on the local markets.

Wine anyone? Of course from a local 'Domaine' existing since 1677. We will be tasting three different wines and hearing all about the family history and how their wine is organically produced since 2013.

I will try and leave the rest of the tour a surprise, but we will also be learning more about, and of course tasting: chocolates, cheese, patisseries and so on.

At the end of the tour we will all sit down on a lovely terrace and enjoy an 'apéro' together. From here on you can choose, either I will walk you back to the parking, either you can make the evening last in the center of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

Market in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is one of the liveliest and most beautiful villages of the Provence. Known for its market day on Wednesday with a large variety of stallholders selling classy clothing, elegant French hats and sunglasses.

And let's not forget the fruit and vegetables from the many local producers, who have a prominent place on this Provençal market. Depending on the season you will find strawberries, peaches and apricots, courgettes, aubergines and tomatoes.

Interested in some traditional French recipes? I can give you so many during our foodtour! The family recipes have been given to me by my husband's grandmother Mamie Elise. We will definitely be talking about this superb woman when we are strolling the ancient streets of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Vincent van Gogh

guided tour saint remy de provence

Vincent van Gogh arrived in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on the 8th of May 1889. Van Gogh suffered from a mental crisis and it was then that he cut off his earlobe. Van Gogh was in Arles at the time but voluntarily committed himself to Saint-Paul de Mausole psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy. He stayed there for a whole year, until May 1890.

It was in a hospital room in Saint-Paul de Mausole that Van Gogh experienced his most productive period. He produced almost 150 paintings and drawings, including ‘The Starry Night’, ‘The Almond Tree Branch in Bloom’ and ‘The Iris’.

Nowadays you can visit the psychiatric hospital, understand Van Gogh's inspiration around Saint-Paul and see his hospital room.
